Personality: At first glance, to those who knew him in his own when, Eddie Dean might have seemed like a cocky little shit, a pretty boy with an addiction and a tendency toward cracking wise who wasn’t going anywhere good. Hell, for a good, long time, Eddie probably believed that himself. Working as a drug smuggler for a mob boss, he had a mean addiction to heroin and a list of insecurities a mile long that basically all boiled down to his brother, Henry. Eddie worshipped Henry, but growing up with him meant that as an adult he spent a lot of time second-guessing himself. Not wanting to be too much, not wanting to come across any way Henry didn’t want him to. He felt too much, had too many emotions, and Henry always taught him, directly and indirectly, that it was a bad thing. That it made him weak or girly or whatever words boys use to hurt each other. Eddie himself enabled this behavior for the rest of his brother’s life; he adored Henry so much and wanted to stay in his good graces and keep him happy that he would do anything to ensure it; even if that involved letting him waste away on too much heroin and letting Henry dictate his own actions in return—like a very large, unhealthy feedback loop, basically. His need for approval also seems to extend to Roland, where he's shown to worry that he's not cut out to be a gunslinger like Roland seems to think he is. He worries that he'll mess up or not be good enough, or do something to put them in danger instead of being helpful. As much as he can be disdainful of Roland and his stoicism and his gallantry, Eddie cares deeply for the gunslinger and wants to do right by him, too.

In reality, Eddie is not what he appears to be at first glance. Certainly, he’s a wise-cracker; his biggest coping mechanism is humor, and not the refined sort. Sophisticated riddles aren’t his style; he prefers the most crass humor possible—terrible puns, awful punchlines, and a good old-fashioned dead baby joke every once in awhile. Joking is easier than facing a problem or conflict with any modicum of seriousness, after all. As a New Yorker, he does tend to fit the fast-talking stereotype as well, and he loves to dramatize his situation, perhaps as a way to recenter attention away from his emotions and reactions, and to keep himself from sounding too sincere or involved, even if he very much is. He’s very practiced at deflecting, basically.

However, as the story progresses, we see him slowly begin to overcome these insecurities that he’s held since childhood. At one point, he feels drawn to a particular piece of wood, having an uncontrollable urge to carve it into a key that he saw in a dream. He remembers being teased by Henry as a kid for his hobby of whittling, but now as an adult, and given a sense of purpose, he’s able to set his childhood fears—of being judged by Henry, of being deemed a wuss—aside and carve the key he has to carve. At the beginning of his story, Eddie is also shown to be incredibly mistrustful, toward Roland in particular. He threatens constantly to either kill or abandon the gunslinger; at one point, he actually has Roland’s own gun pointed at his temple, and is ready to shoot. His fear of a new place and his reluctance to believe that Roland is anything but bad news mean that it’s difficult for him, for a long while, to trust Roland, let alone feel anything like love or friendship toward him. But after months of survival in the wilderness, we see that he’s not only grown attached, but grown incredibly protective toward Roland, toward Susannah, and eventually toward Jake. He’s blossomed from a paranoid, tetchy drug addict into someone very capable of surviving and helping others survive.

Eddie risks his own neck for the members of his ka-tet on more than one occasion. His tendency to act without thinking causes him to put his life in danger at several points, including letting himself be treed by a giant, rabid cyborg bear to distract it while his wife puts it down. However, it also makes him an excellent gunslinger. He is shown at several points to have great instincts, and one of them is the instinct to shoot before he can even really think about it—to draw his gun and draw a bead on his target in one fluid motion without anything like thought or fear interfering. His bravery and recklessness are not purely physical; he does a lot of speaking without thinking, which can both land him in hot water and also save him and the rest of his ka-tet—such as in the instance of Blaine the Mono, a train possessed by a living computer. Blaine was intent on killing Eddie and his friends by blunt force if they couldn’t stump him with a riddle. After hours of failed attempts, it turns out that Eddie’s smart mouth is the thing that saves them; his shitty, nonsensical jokes cause Blaine to short-circuit and they’re able to slow down the train just in time to keep from dying on impact. He’s an accidental hero in many ways; it's not often one saves the day with a dead baby joke, after all.
